Jefferson’s Going to School

Jacob spent nearly three years in a child development center before coming home to spend the day with Jenny and Jefferson.  Well, Jefferson’s never had that pleasure.  When Jacob started back to school this year it was easy to see Jeffer was equal parts jealous and bored.  Mommy and Judah are fun and all but he wanted more.  We discussed the possibility of him doing a mother’s day out last spring but never pulled the lever.  It came back up this fall and we decided to look into it.  After looking at a few places we placed his name on a waiting list at our favorite.  We lucked out when a spot opened up within a week of requesting.

He started last week and we made a big deal out of it.  We took pictures of him and Jacob before heading out to drop Jacob off at school.  Before taking him to the school we stopped at Merrit’s Bakery for donuts and juice.  He is only attending one day a week but he loves his “school”.  I think Jenny may like it the most.

The First Day

The first day has finally arrived.  After nearly nine months of anticipation Jacob started “Pre-K” today.  He attends Mayo Demonstration School of Science & Technology.  Mayo is a “magnet” school within the Tulsa Public School system and one of the few schools in Oklahoma to receive an 8 out of 10 from GreatSchools.  Mayo is a lot different than a traditional elementary school but we have heard great things from parents, former students and the business community.  The PTA is extremely active and we are so impressed with their desire to acclimate us & Jacob to the new school.

Mayo requires uniforms for all students and we were excited about how easy this would make school shopping.  However, little did we know stores in Tulsa don’t carry reasonably priced pants and shirts for skinny little boys like Jacob.  After several stops and starts, a little online sleuthing and late night embroidery by Jenny we stocked him up on his school clothes just in time for today.  Jenny also did an awesome job sewing a “brain break” mat from OU fleece.

The actual first morning went great.  He woke up ready to go and was eager to get his clothes on and in atypical fashion we arrived 30 minutes early.  While we waited Jacob quickly made friends and appears to be quite the social butterfly.  I was prepared for a scene straight from the movies where tears would flow and we would literally push him through the door but the teachers really set us up to leave him with little fanfare.  They brought everyone, us included, to the classroom and started class then slowly herded us down the hall without the kids even noticing to the “Boo-Hoo Breakfast.”  Jenny & I both teared up a bit (yes I can admit that) but overall we were proud of how we held it all in.  Jeffer was reluctant to leave and concerned about how he would spend his day without Jacob.  Early reports from Jacob’s teachers are good and we are looking forward to a full week of learning next week.  We are very blessed Jacob was selected to attend Mayo and can’t wait to see how much he learns.

P.S.  I shot some video, but haven’t had time to edit it yet.  It will be up soon.
