An Early Father’s Day Gift

Father’s Day isn’t for another month but it came a bit early for Josh this year.  The new house sits on a 1/3 acre lot and has quite a bit of slope to it.  Our current mower was about six years old and was struggling to run consistently.  It also happened to be a push mower and it was tough getting our new lawn mowed.  I told him to pick a new one out for his Father’s Day gift and go get it when he was ready.  Well, with all the rain we’ve had today was the day.  After hours of research he went with this Toro:

I guess it was the right choice because the lawn looks nice and mowed and he isn’t complaining about his back hurting.  Yet.

Father’s Day Weekend 2009

For Father’s Day this year I wanted a relaxing, laid back weekend.  I would say it was a success.  Dad arrived from OKC Saturday morning and as is his custom had gifts in tow.  He brought the boys small animals that squirted water from their mouth.  Jenny made a huge breakfast of waffles, eggs and bacon.  She served the waffles with freshly sliced peaches and whipped cream.  They were amazing!

After a filling breakfast we took a driving tour of downtown on our way to Whole Foods Market on Brookside.  Dad was looking to buy fresh pistachios for grandpa and we thought they would have a great selection.  Visiting Whole Foods on Saturday is like going to a bazaar.  We sampled, cheese, meats, crackers, espresso (Topeca!) fish seed oil and much more.  Dad found his pistachios and even some fresh ground peanut butter.  We also drank fresh fruit smoothies from the coffee bar and they were very good.  Who knew you could spend so much time and have so much fun in a grocery store.

Following our field trip to a grocery store we drove over to the new park at the 41st Street Plaza sponsored by QT.  The park has an amazing jungle gym and super cool water features.  It was busy but the boys had plenty of room to play.  Jacob loved sitting with “Papa” and splashing in the shallow rock pool.  Jeffer cautiously enjoyed the water but loved cooking mulch at a part of the jungle gym that looked like a kitchen.

While Jenny watched the boys, dad & I slipped away for a quick jaunt on the Tulsa Townies.  The Townies are pink bikes you can rent from automated stations throughout the river parks.  Dad hadn’t ridden a bike in nearly 30 years, but he picked it back up just like the old saying says.  We set a goal of 30 minutes but after ten we were ready to turn around.  The only bike I could get was a ladies bike with a flat tire and the chain came off as soon as we turned around.  We rode a total of two miles and had a great time.

With all of us sufficiently worn out we headed back home to relax for the last few hours dad was in town.  We all had a great time with dad and can’t wait for him to come back.

After dad left I decided I wanted a steak for dinner.  With Jenny tucking the boys in I ran up to the grocery store and bought ribeyes, corn on the cob, asparagus and Blue Bell key lime pie ice cream.

Glorious Father's Day cookout for myself. Ribeyes, corn on th... on Twitpic

The steaks turned out perfect (if I don’t say so myself), of course we gorged ourselves on the grilled goodness.  The key lime ice cream was outstanding and may be one of my new favorites.

Jenny got up at 4a to put a roast, potatoes, carrots, onions and a selection of our home grown herbs in the crock pot.  By the time I was up and getting ready for church it smelled unbelievable.  Mom arrived at 9:30a and was great in helping us get the boys ready for church.  We went to the early service at LifeChurch.  After church I raced home in anticipation of lunch.  Jenny’s pot roast come our perfect and I was ready for a nap immediately.  I did put off the nap but Mom tolerated my desire to watch the US Open golf tournament and work on reorganizing our digital photos.

With the photos organized it was time to move onto cards and gifts.  She brought me a wonderful Father’s Day gift of four Tervis Tumblers.  I have wanted a set for a while, but would never splurge on them for myself.  They keep drinks hot/cold, don’t sweat and our guaranteed for life. What is not to like?

As always the boys love having Gammy at the house and were sad to leave her so soon.  Within 30 minutes of her leaving I was conked out on the couch enjoying the best gift, a two hour nap.
