Down with the awnings!

The first floor windows on the front of our home are “decorated” with metal awnings.  Since the day we saw the house we’ve wanted to rip them off.  Well, the day has arrived!  The awnings go down today!

If all goes well we’ll have a follow up post showing the difference later this weekend.

Demo Days

Yesterday marked the begining of our first remodeling project on the new home, the nursery.  The room is upstairs just off the stairs and has a great view of the back & side yards.  We must assume the room was home to girls for some time based upon the lilac floral wallpaper.  Based on the style of the paper and the fact it is the only layer on the plaster with no paint beneath leads us to believe it is original to the home.  While sad to tear out something original to the home that has lasted 85 years it is in quite disrepair and has to come down.  Due to cracking in the plaster, the potential for water damage behind the window AC unit  and zero insulation in the walls we decided to tear this room down to the studs and install drywall.  I recruited two men from our Life Group and we went to town.  We took the room from walls to no-walls in about 5 hours.  It was dusty, dusty, dusty, dusty and dusty work, but we powered through.  I’m so thankful for the guys help, because without them it wouldn’t have happened!

It started with…

It started with hanging a curtain rod.  Thank goodness it didn’t end too far from there.  What happened in between is just classic Josh.  Our new home has never been blessed with central air conditioning.  As a result we have window air conditioners hanging out of windows in most of the rooms.  We plan on installing a new central heat & air conditioning system very soon and Josh has been longing to rip one of the window AC’s out.  With the ink finally dry on the deed he was free to hack away.  My asking him to hang a curtain rod over a window containing a unit was just an open invite.  Since they installed the unit with every intention of it staying it took some banging, some prying, some sawing, some kicking and a lot of pulling.  Finally he was able to slide it out.  Luckily, the wood window closed snug once the unit was out.  The creased curtain is on the rod, but is certainly not the final product.  The beautiful wallpaper and pistachio paint will someday be gone and a gal can’t pick her curtains until those are replacd, right?

I’m pretty sure a lot of projects around this crazy old house are going to contain it started with…
